Gas Industry in World War I
When World War I occurred, business became brisk in Japan. On the other hand, the situation of gas industry fell into a difficult situation because price of coal, which was raw material of gas, was risen.
After the war, however, Japanese business suddenly fell into a state of depression. The depression operated on gas industry effectively in point of a fall in the price of coal. In the mean time, the price of charcoal which is rival of gas in heat business did not fall. At that time when gas industry was urge to change its business field to heat business from lighting business on account of advance of electricity, a differential of the price between gas and charcoal extended the share of gas in heat business.
The Kanto Great Earthquake occurred in 1923 gave a blow to gas industry, however it also improved the fixed image of gas. The fact that any gas manufacturing factory and gas holders did not catch fire in spite of great earthquake exploded the image of gas that gas is dangerous. The Kanto Great Earthquake
