Gas industry of those days in Japan
(the first half of Meiji era) 1868-1887

Yokohama-the place of origin of gas industry in Japan
In 1870, Yoshiemon Takashima, who was influential industrialist, was requested to cooperate with Kanagawa prefectural office in setting up the gaslamp. As soon as he organized "Nihonshachu", he invited Henri Pregran, who was French engineer and set up gaslamp at Shanghai at that time, and planned gas industry at Yokohama with him.
In September 26, 1872, about 10 gaslamps were set up between the Oe bridge and the Bashamichi-Honmachi Street.
This is the beginning of Gas industry in Japan.
The gaslamp of those days was the naked bulb and emitted not pale light like mantle, which spread later, but reddish-brown light by burning coal gas. The naked flame wavered by browing wind with a hissing sound.
The gaslamp, the first modern lighting in Japan, was symbolic of industrial modernization and rapidly became wide-spread.
