Gas industry of those days in Japan
(the second half of Meiji era) 1888-1911
Use of gas was extended to the field of heat

Until 1887, gas business in Japan was conducted in only three cities, Yokohama, Tokyo and Kobe. A gas mantle which had been invented by Austrian scientist in 1887 was introduced to Japan from England in 1896. The gas mantle which emits white bright light took the place of the naked bulb. By the bright gas mantle, a gas lump spread fast. Subsequently, gas appliances such as gas burners, gas kiln, gas roaster, gas water heater, gas iron and gas stove were imported and spread. As a result, gas business made rapid progress in Japan: Gas business was gradually conducted in Osaka, Nagoya, Nagasaki, Monji and main cities in Japan as modern industry.
