Natural gas, which we are now in the process of converting to, consists mainly of methane, with few impurities, and so it is expected to be a clean environmentally friendly energy source of the future. There is no dust and sulfur oxide to pollute the air and it possesses other superb feature: it has 31% less of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide than oil. Proved reserves of natural gas is about 146 trillion m3 as of end of 1998. Compared to reserves/production ratio of 41 years for oil, that of natural gas is 63 years (BP Statistical Review of World Energy 1999). Natural gas fields are now being discovered in rapid succession. Oil fields are concentrated mainly in parts of the Middle East, but natural gas fields are distributed widely throughout the world. Because of this, natural gas is not greatly influenced by political changes. We have concluded long term contracts with politically stable areas around the Pacific to supply us with natural gas, and we can expect a stable supply for the future. Natural gas has about 2.4 times the calorific value of the gas currently used, and current equipment such as pipelines, holding tanks(gas holders)etc., can be modified effectively to handle it. It can also be efficiently manufactured at simple facilities. Consequently, it enables us to limit expenditure on long-range equipment investment and thus will contribute to the long-term stability of gas rates. |
