The local woodcraft industry at Miyajima was started when carpenters were brought from Kyoto in the early 13th century. The traditional techniques are used in turning, molding and woodcarving, and various objects such as tea ceremony items, trays and sculptures are manufactured. The beautiful grain of the wood visible on the surface is characteristic of these works. |
