| 12 Color that Absorbs Everything: Black |
* What color is most associated with evil, or ill omen? To represent death, darkness, suppression, and wickedness, we use black more frequently than any other color. Japanese language has a term "haraguroi (black abdominal), " while English has a term "black hearted," both referring to an evil-minded person. Black and white are the two most extreme colors. Both represent the height of beauty, and well express the psychological state of a person who uses the colors. For instance, if you ask a person who strongly denies himself to paint a picture, he will certainly paint everything black, because everything in his vision is black.* Three years ago, I gave a psychological test that used colors to young employees of a certain company. There were about 30 men and women, who began painting upon my instruction. There was one young man, however, who remained motionless, folding his arms tightly. Even when his supervisor told him to paint, he stayed motionless. It was a surprise for his colleagues because he was recognized as an extremely cheerful character. After all other people completed painting, he suddenly began drawing a large rectangular on the provided sheet. Then he began to fill out the rectangular with black, making a large sound as he painted with a black crayon. He did not notice the astonishment of his colleagues, but continued painting. While painting furiously, he shouted loudly, "Why should a man get angry? I don't want to get angry." Although the other people having the test looked surprised at and suspicious of his behavior at first, they gradually began observing him quietly, waitin g until he completed the picture. |
| A Talkative Color |
* By painting black, he was sweeping away all his pent-up feelings and
clearing his mind. At a later date, to my great relief, he recalled that
moment and told me that he felt very refreshed after painting that black
picture.* Black is believed to be a color of silence and concealing. Yet, the color sometimes "talks" even more eloquently than any other tone. We obtain black color when we mix various colors. Similarly, when our mind has various, complex feelings, perhaps our mind becomes like a melting pot, mixing diverse items, and then our feelings become darker and darker until they all become pure black color. |
